Correlation function decay in linear continuum systems

Abstract

In this paper, written for the volume commemorating the sixtieth birthday of Michael Fisher, I reexamine the long-range decay of the pair correlation function in one-dimensional continuum models where attractive and repulsive potentials are present together. I argue that the correlation function decay goes effectively from monotonic to oscillatory at a pseudo-phase-transition from a gas-like phase of clusters to a liquid-like phase. Though there is no actual discontinuity, this pseudo-phase-transition resembles an “anomalous first order phase transition”.
