Abstract

We measured the viscosity of three hard-sphere dispersions of different sized particles as a function of the Péclet number. The particle radii vary from 28 to 78 nm. The dispersions consist of sterically stabilized sitica particles dispersed in cyclohexane. It is found that in between two Newtonian plateaus at very small and large shear rates, respectively, there is a large region of Péclet numbers where the viscosity decreases proportional to the square root of the Péclet number. The constant of proportionality increases with volume fraction but is independent of particle size.
