Ionic recombination in a weakly ionized gas

Abstract

An expansion of the recombination constant α in terms of multiple collisions is specified according to the conditions of models for the ion-pair stabilization process (absorbing sphere, critical energy barrier). The effect of the ambient gas on α is discussed in relation to the single collision concept of Thomson and the objections against it. For the critical energy model it is shown that in the low-density limit the α-expansion reduces to contributions from transitions between bound ion-pair states and reproduces the well-known linear dependence of α on the gas density. The convergency of this α-series is demonstrated for a simple assumption as to the ion-neutral interaction and an upper bound of the recombination constant is estimated. The relation between this approach and the transitional quasi-equilibrium theory is discussed.
