Field induced cross effect between heat and momentum transport in a Knudsen gas

Abstract

The cross effect between heat and particle flux in a molecular Knudsen gas is investigated by observing a magnetic field induced pressure difference perpendicular to an applied temperature difference. Data are given for N2, HD and CH4. The effect results from molecular angular momentum polarization produced in molecule-surface interaction. The theory for these phenomena is worked out and compared with the experimental data. Signs and magnitudes of matrix element produces describing the production of polarizations are determined. It is found that polarizations are produced from heat flux and particle flux with roughly the same efficiency.
