Kinetic theory for a weakly-associated diatomic gas with reactions

Abstract

Kinetic theory is discussed for a spatially uniform gas in which diatomic molecules occur as two-body bound states. The processes of collision-induced dissociation and formation of molecules, rearrangement collisions, and inelastic scattering are included and described in terms related to multi-channel scattering theory for the three-body problem. Account is taken of coherence between collisions and the occurence of elements of the molecular density matrix which are not diagonal in the internal energy. Rate equations are derived for the molecular density matrix and the resulting rate coefficients depend on T-matrices off the energy shell.
