Investing in yellowfin tuna : The economics of conservation

Abstract

Yellowfin tuna are harvested as juveniles by purse-seiners and as adults by long-liners. The allocation of the yellowfin stock between these two gear types can be treated as an Investment decision. A framework for making such decisions, Incorporating biological and economic considerations, is presented and applied. When biological factors alone are considered, the case for conservation Is not strong. However, when an economic model taking account of the multi-species nature of the two fisheries Is used to analyse the Issue a case for conservation can be made.
