La desigualdad social frente al COVID-19 en el Área Metropolitana de Santiago (Chile)

Abstract

El mundo enfrentó en 2020 una de las peores situaciones en materia de salud y mortalidad en más de un siglo. En América Latina, la desigualdad social, la pobreza y la precariedad de las condiciones de vida constituyen marcos de vulnerabilidad social y demográfica que potencian el impacto de la enfermedad por coronavirus (COVID-19) en las condiciones de salud y mortalidad de la población. Chile no es la excepción. Al 30 de septiembre de 2020, el COVID-19 se constituyó en la primera causa de muerte en el Área Metropolitana de Santiago y la tercera a nivel nacional. En Santiago, los más afectados son los estratos de menores ingresos, en que el impacto en la mortalidad y la esperanza de vida ha sido muy superior al registrado en la población de altos ingresos.
