Las causas externas de muerte y su efecto sobre la esperanza de vida en las ciudades latinoamericanas: el ejemplo de Chile y el Ecuador, 2000-2010

Abstract

Se analiza la carga antagónica en la ciudad latinoamericana entre su condición claramente aventajada en términos de desarrollo nacional y su alta concentración de mortalidad por causas externas. Chile y el Ecuador son ejemplos para identificar y dar seguimiento a los patrones de causas de muerte externas en sus ciudades en 2000-2010 con datos del sistema de registros vitales de ambos países. Las unidades administrativas menores de cada país son agrupadas en tres conglomerados geográficos según su tamaño poblacional. Se estiman tasas estandarizadas de mortalidad por causas externas y se descompone la esperanza de vida de los grupos para evaluar las contribuciones diferenciales por edad y causa externa específica durante el período. La ventaja de las ciudades principales y su condición favorecida en términos de desarrollo nacional se impone en ambos países, más aún ante la aplicación de políticas de control o prevención de las causas externas de muerte.
