Desnutrición crónica infantil y desigualdad socioeconómica en América Latina y el Caribe

Abstract

En este trabajo se indaga acerca de los factores que determinanel nivel de desnutrición crónica infantil y su distribución socioeconómicaen ocho países de América Latina y el Caribe. Para ello se utiliza unametodología que permite descomponer un índice de desigualdadsocioeconómica (el índice de concentración); según los factores quelo afectan. En el caso de los países analizados, la "riqueza" de loshogares (medida mediante un indicador de bienestar material); y elnivel educativo de las madres son los determinantes más importantesde la distribución de dicha desnutrición. Los factores biomédicosconsiderados pueden ser relevantes para explicar el nivel de ladesnutrición, pero su contribución para explicar la desigualdad esrelativamente baja. Asimismo, factores geográficos, culturales, étnicose idiosincrásicos juegan un rol explicativo limitado y, aparentemente,lo hacen a partir de su relación con la distribución de las variablessocioeconómicas mencionadas.
