La sostenibilidad de la política de esterilización monetaria

Abstract

El foco de este trabajo son las políticas que se proponen el control simultáneo del tipo de cambio y las condiciones monetarias (por ejemplo, una tasa de interés instrumental);, con libre movilidad del capital y en contextos en que existe exceso de oferta de moneda internacional y el banco central establece metas para el tipo de cambio y la tasa de interés. En este artículo se calcula la tasa de interés local máxima que permite en cada momento que la política de esterilización sea sostenible; se define el grado de autonomía monetaria como la diferencia entre dicha tasa, por un lado, y la suma de la tasa de interés internacional y la de aumento del tipo de cambio, por otro, y se analiza la dinámica del grado de autonomía. Ejemplos numéricos con datos de Argentina y otros sugieren que la política de esterilización es sostenible y que existe un considerable grado de autonomía monetaria en contextos que no resultan para nada extraordinarios en muchas economías en desarrollo.
