Abstract

This article examines key features of the performance of the Mexican economy both under the state-led development agenda that prevailed until 1981, and under the neoliberal reforms in force from the mid-1980s until the last year of the Peña Nieto administration in 2018. The analysis shows the failure of neoliberalism. It includes an analysis of the main economic and social policies of the current administration, with an emphasis on identifying its continuities and breaks with those that characterized the decades of neoliberalism in Mexico. The work closes with a series of recommendations, especially related to the advisability of promoting an industrial policy.
