Abstract

Educational inequality is a topic widely discussed in the literature, with many factors influencing the uneven performance of students. In that order, the purpose of this article is to test the hypothesis that gender is a determinant of educational achievement and women are better in literacy, while men are better in math and science. For that objetive, multivariate multilevel model is estimated using data from the PISA 2009 survey. The results favour the initial hypothesis.
