Abstract
This paper undertakes construction of state-specific, rural consumer price indices. The related all-India consumer price indices are a natural byproduct of this exercise. The all-India rural cost of living indices have been worked out for food, non- food and all consumer items taken together (general) on the basis of two alternative weighting diagrams relating to the observed patterns of rural consumer expenditures in 1960-61 and 1970-71. The relevant index numbers have been computed for 15 major states as well as for all-India rural population for five different years (the recent NSS Survey years), viz., 1970-71, 1972-73, 1973-74, 1977-78 and 1983
