Trotz der etwas langsameren Gangart der weltwirtschaftlichen Konjunktur bleiben die Aussichten für die deutsche Konjunktur positiv. Allerdings haben die Risiken im Vergleich zum Winter zugenommen. So dürfte die Hypothekenkrise in den USA das dortige Wachstum noch auf längere Sicht empfindlich dämpfen. Trotz der Euro-Aufwertung sind die Lebenshaltungskosten nochmals deutlich angestiegen. Dies verringert den Kaufkraftzuwachs der Verbraucher, so dass sich die Chancen für eine nachhaltige Belebung des privaten Konsums zuletzt eingetrübt haben. Daher reduziert das DIW Berlin seine Wachstumsprognose für das laufende Jahr geringfügig auf 2,0 Prozent. Für 2009 wird ein Wachstum von 1,6 Prozent prognostiziert. Der Anstieg der Verbraucherpreise wird insbesondere in der ersten Jahreshälfte noch deutlich über der 2-Prozent-Marke liegen. Er sollte sich jedoch im weiteren Verlauf allmählich wieder zurückbilden. Im Mittel ist für 2008 eine Preissteigerung von rund 2,5 Prozent zu erwarten. Im kommenden Jahr wird der Preisauftrieb mit 1,8 Prozent wieder moderat ausfallen.
