Rote Biotechnologie: Deutschland noch nicht an der Spitze in Europa

Abstract

Die moderne Biotechnologie ist eine wissensintensive Querschnitts technologie und hat große Wachstumspotentiale. Derzeit weist die Anwendung der Biotechnologie in der Pharmazeutischen Industrie und der Medizin (rote Biotechnologie) weltweit die größte Wachstumsdynamik auf. Deutschland ist erst Mitte der 90er Jahre mit der Förderinitiative BioRegio der damaligen Bundesregierung nennenswert in die Kommerzialisierung der Biotechnologie eingestiegen. Eine vom DIW Berlin im Auftrag der Hans-Böckler-Stiftung durchgeführte Studie zur Position Deutschlands als Standort für die rote Biotechnologie zeigt nun, dass das deutsche Innovationssystem der roten Biotechnologie im internationalen Vergleich wettbewerbsfähig ist und einen Wettbewerbsvorteil in den Bereichen Diagnostik und Produktion hat. Großbritannien verfügt allerdings gegenüber Deutschland sowie den ebenfalls untersuchten Ländern Indien und Israel über die ausgereifteste Biotechnologieindustrie und ein stimulierenderes Innovationssystem.
