Abstract

The Corona pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict have fundamentally and unexpectedly changed the long-standing economic conditions in the EMU. The European financial sector is feeling the beginning of a turning point, in particular due to the massive interest rate increases by the ECB since July 2022. The necessary adjustments are not only influencing the medium and long-term business strategies of the financial intermediaries, but also the provision of the real economic sectors with debt capital. In this context, the different market structures in the EMU countries, which stand in the way of the harmonisation desired by the ECB and the European banking supervisory authorities, become apparent once again. The fight against inflation and the simultaneously initiated changes in the regulatory order within the banking union pose challenges for credit institutions that might trigger considerable distortions.
