Abstract

Due to the long-standing debate about the pros and cons of using public debt as a policy tool, we know a lot about what experts (e. g. fiscal policymakers, economists) think of deficit spending, budget consolidation or fiscal rules. In contrast, in the literature on the political economy of public debt there are relatively few empirical studies which investigate the obvious research question of what citizens think about public debt; though citizens’ opinions are likely to be significantly influenced by experts and their public statements. This paper gives an overview of the literature in this specific research field. Moreover, the paper draws attention to desiderata and discusses the political implications of the research findings.
