Abstract

(VA) The aim of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of business strategies and strategic management through an exploratory study of the dynamics between influence and political strategies and issues related to innovation strategies. We base our theoretical argument on David Teece’s “profiting from innovation” model. We show through four case studies (Pfizer, Merck, Google and IBM) based on secondary data how influencing and intellectual property actions are combined to serve business strategy purposes, especially here to tighten or weaken the appropriability regime.
