Abstract

Even if the literature on standards has highlighted many factors that can explain the success of one format to another (such as the importance of increasing returns to adoption), we seek, through this article, to propose a complementary approach. Indeed, we highlight how the concept of focal point utilized in the game theory can explain the emergence of a standard. In the absence of coordination between actors, the presence of a focal point leads them to choose the same technology and thus, to set the standard in a market. To illustrate this, we study the case of the pornographic industry and the way this industry succeeds to be considered as focal point by the other actors and to exploit this position.
