Abstract

The literature on how strategic orientations influence business growth is marginal although Penrose (1959) treated an entrepreneurial spirit and entrepreneurial leadership in their seminal writings as the sine qua non of continuous growth. Given partially scant and unequivocal empirical evidence, the present article focuses on how market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation influence growth. Market orientation and entrepreneurial orientation may affect growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in different ways Thereby, how and in which combinations they are strategically applied is of particular interest. For this purpose, we conducted qualitative interviews among 17 SMEs from various industries and four countries. The results reveal that customer orientation and sub-dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation are crucial for SME growth in the perception of the entrepreneurs.
