Abstract

Based upon the recent discussion concerning the theoretical and practical implications of industry 4.0, the business models of SMEs should be taken under scrutiny. Differing from previous papers that focus on technical and production-oriented issues, this paper addresses the question whether SMEs’ business models change if these firms approach and apply industry 4.0. Additionally, empirical results of a 2016 study among 211 SMEs are depicted. Our paper shows that manufacturing companies focus on process standardization in the value chain, whereas service companies view the need to digitize the interfaces towards their respective customers.
