Abstract

Business model innovation is increasingly becoming a necessary entrepreneurial skill for established companies in order to adapt to changing markets. This involves both optimal timing as well as an effective organizational implementation of the idea. Although there already are process-based approaches to business model innovation, these hardly contain tangible information on how to evaluate the developed ideas or alternatives. However, an adequate evaluation is necessary for providing decision makers with a suitable information basis, and prevent gut decisions and a waste of resources. In practice, the evaluation phase within the business model innovation process represents a major challenge. Using an approach based on systems thinking, a first conceptual framework for the evaluation of business model alternatives will be developed. This framework can be useful both in practice (for established companies and start-ups) and science.
