Abstract

Cultural and creative industries belong to the fastest growing sectors and are currently strongly characterized by new market entrants. About two-thirds of all start-ups in the creative and cultural industries need external capital, but currently there is not any sufficient knowledge regarding the start-up financing in the very complex structure of this sector. This paper specifically combines the research on cultural and creative industries and start-up financing and examines the entrepreneurial factors inhibiting or stimulating the influence on capital acquisition. Based on a large empirical study (n = 414 in 2013), the financing structure for start-ups is described by means of a multivariate regression model. In conclusion, individual and entrepreneurial capabilities of the actors play a significant and decisive role in the choice of finance forms and the degree of diversification of financial structures. Thus, the empirical findings provide decision-making tools for business start-ups in the cultural and creative industries.
