Abstract

Family firms are the backbone of most economies around the globe. Academic research has recognized the importance of family firms. Family firm research therefore has developed into an increasing research field. Especially the interest in family firm internationalization has sharply inclined in recent years. However, research on family firm is still scarce and lacks of theory integration. This paper therefore attempts to explain the lack of theory integration into the field of family business internationalization and focuses on the main applied theories. After compiling the fundamentals of the main strategic theoretical frameworks the argumentation of the most used internationalization theories are presented. The purpose of this paper is finally twofold: First to give a theoretical overview of the theoretical frameworks used and second to give guidance for future research.
