Abstract

The characteristic features of SMEs determine the possibilities and limitations of their corporate financing. Based hereupon, the issuing of SME-bonds was deemed virtually infeasible and was hardly observed especially in SME-shaped economies like the Austrian or German one. Inconsistent with this traditional view, these markets saw a growing number of SME-bond-issues in recent years. This is why this state-of-the-art-article explains the idea of those microbonds as well as delivering an explanation of their emergence and future prospects using approaches of institutional economics.
