Abstract

Banks are of crucial importance in corporate restructuring. Although their importance should be even higher in SMEs, given their dominant financing role, there is a relative paucity of empirical studies on banks' restructuring activities. Moreover, a large fraction of publications deals only with certain aspects of their corporate restructuring role. Therefore, this paper aims at summarizing extant empirical research in order to synthesize their findings concerning banks' strategies and activities in the distress of SMEs, factors that influence the role of banks in corporate restructuring and the implications of their involvement in the restructuring process. Based on the literature review, the paper shows gaps in current and past research that should be addressed in the future.
