Abstract

Starting a business affects the life of the entrepreneur in many aspects. A comprehensive measure of individual start-up success should encompass the various effects and go beyond partial measures such as income or mere start-up survival. Along the lines of recent happiness research, we analyze the effect of the start-up decision on subjective well-being. Using individual-level data from the KfW-Start-up Monitor, a population-representative large-scale survey on start-up activity in Germany, we compare founders with ongoing business, founders who have already given up their business, and non-founders. Our results show that income changes within certain boundaries do not lead to changes in well-being of founders. Yet founders do not per se report a higher level of well-being. Most strikingly, necessity motives and start-up failure come along with lower well-being. We conclude that founders' personal circumstances have to match the requirements of the business projects in order for the start-ups to be successful.
