Las estadisticas comerciales de Puerto Rico: aplicacion y precision. 1828–1870

Abstract

Hace cuarenta años ya que V. Andrés Alvarez publicó una crítica de las estadísticas comerciales de España que ponía en duda su valor como instrumento de investigación histórica, afirmando que los cambios anuales que desde 1869 se hacían en el valor unitario de las mercancías respondían a presiones políticas; las distorsiones producidas reducirían su utilidad. Desde entonces, Gabriel Tortella y sus colaboradores, seguidos por Leandro Prados de la Escosura, han publicado series de importación y exportación de los renglones más importantes, formados a base de precios corrientes en la prensa comercial de la época. Su conclusión fue que, generalmente, las importaciones estaban sobrevaloradas y las exportaciones tasadas en menos de su valor real de 1850 hasta 1913. A diferencia de Andrés Alvarez, sin embargo, no creen que la discrepancia llegue a invalidar las estadísticas. Ninguno de los estudios mencionados examinan si las cantidades son fiables, ni tocan al problema del destino final de las exportaciones.
