Labors Appropriate to Their Sex: Gender, Labor, and Politics in Urban Chile, 1900 1930. By Elizabeth Quay Hutchison. Durham, NC: Duke University Press, 2001. Pp. xvii, 342. $64.95, cloth; $21.95, paper
AbstractThe product of assiduous research on working women, feminist movements, labor organizations, the social question, and industrial labor relations in early-twentieth-century Chile, this book explores how and why debates on women s work influenced labor politics, women s activism, and state formation during the so-called Parliamentary Republic (1891 1925). This study breaks new ground in the country s labor historiography and is a substantial contribution to a recent and compelling wave of scholarship on gender in Chile a body of work that includes notable studies by Thomas Miller Klubock and Karin Alejandra Rosemblatt, among others.
