Abstract

The European Parliamentary Assembly opened its ordinary session for 1959 on January 7. Mr. Robert Schuman, former French premier and initiator of die European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), was re-elected President by acclamation. The ensuing debates covered a wide field, including the opening up of markets, the problem of competition, a European program for energy resources, industrial safeguards, hygiene and the protection of health, social policy, shortening of the working week in the coal and steel industries of the Community, transport problems, a long-term economic policy, agricultural problems, and the form of association for overseas territories and dependencies.
