Abstract

The essays in this Special Issue were initially written for the first Past, Present and Policy meeting, a New Economic History Panel, that was held in Vienna, 30 September 1 October 2005. This panel was designed by Marc Flandreau and is currently sponsored by the Chaire de Finances Internationales at the Institut d Etudes Politiques de Paris, and by the Centre for Economic Policy Research in London. The Vienna meeting, known as PPP1, was hosted and sponsored by the Austrian National Bank.
