Abstract

Abstract. The Spanish economy implemented an economic model (1995-2007) based on the construction sector. Until 2007 this model enhanced economic growth and reduced notably the unemployment rate. The outcome of the US¿s subprime meltdown in 2008 was the opposite. Two econometric models were estimated through the first difference Okun¿s model (1962), it was proved the bidirectional and negative relationship between the output of the construction sector and the unemployment rate for 1995.1-2012.2. The first model an UVAR, threw that the construction output reduces immediately unemployment and conversely that the former shrinks the latter deeper and for longer. The second model, in a more classical fashion, allowed us to find critical points, very useful for economic analysis. Structural stability was proven through the Quandt-Andrews Test.
