Abstract

Abstract: This article develops a model of endogenous criminal activities to study the effects of inequality of opportunities and social mobility on the crimelevel. In particular, a general equilibrium model derived from the economic theory of conflict is proposed, in which a group of heterogeneousagents choose the allocation of resources between productive and predatory activities. One of the main results is that the relationship betweeninequality of opportunities, social mobility and delinquent activities is non-monotonic and depends on the existing conditions of criminality ina given society. According to the model´s set of parameters, this study finds counterintuitive results, like the reduction of aggregate crime levelwhen the inequality of opportunities increases or social mobility decreases. The latter indicates that, under certain conditions, a tradeoff couldexist between distributive equity and the security of private property claims.
