La multibanca y la evidencia sobre las economías de escala en la banca colombiana: una nota teórica sobre una discusión política

Abstract

En esta nota se afirma que la evidencia de economías de escala y de producción conjunta es muy débil. Se muestra que las estimaciones existentes no cumplen con algunos de los supuestos implícitos en la función usada. Sin el cumplimiento de estos supuestos los coeficientes estimados no pueden interpretarse como evidencia de economías de escala y de producción conjunta. Además, para confirmar la existencia de economías de escala y de producción conjunta, en este trabajo se calculan indicadores con base en la teoría de la firma multiproducto. Los resultados de este ejercicio muestran valores factibles o imposibles. Partiendo de esta evaluación, se derivan algunas conclusiones interesantes en la discusión actual sobre el sistema óptimo de la banca colombiana.
