Erbschaften und Vermögensungleichheit in Österreich

Abstract

Der Artikel untersucht die Frage, inwiefern Erbschaften zur Ungleichheit in der Vermögensverteilung in Österreich beitragen. Die Analyse basiert auf den Daten einer Haushaltsbefragung der OeNB zum Geldvermögen der privaten Haushalte in Österreich und ist eingeengt auf die Charakteristika der Erben und die Höhe ihrer Erbschaften. Diese Querschnittsdaten können Hinweise zum Zusammenhang von Erbschaften und Vermögensungleichheit liefern. Erbschaften haben ein ähnliches Verteilungsmuster wie Geldvermögen. Erbchancen sind sozial ungleich verteilt und durch berufliche Position, Einkommen und Alter der Erben bestimmt. Die Erbquote ist in den letzten 15 Jahren deutlich angestiegen. Aber nur ein Teil der Bevölkerung macht eine Erbschaft und nur Wenige erben sehr hohe Beträge. Ein für die aktuelle Debatte zur geplanten Abschaffung der Erbschaftssteuer in Österreich relevantes Ergebnis dieses Artikels ist, dass Erbschaften zur Reproduktion von sozialer Ungleichheit beitragen.
