Ifo Business Survey for March 2014 in Brief: Crimea Crisis Dampens Optimistic Expectations for German Economy

Abstract

After four successive increases the Ifo Business Climate Index for German trade and industry fell in March. Companies expressed far less confidence in future business developments, but were more satisfied with their current business situation. The crisis in emerging countries and events in Crimea are having an impact. The Ifo Employment Barometer for German trade and industry also edged downwards slightly from last month’s high level. Although the index fell in all segments, apart from retailing, the short-term employment dynamics are slightly positive.
