German manufacturing continues on its successful course

Abstract

The regional distribution of industrial output has increasingly shifted from the industrialized countries to the emerging countries over the past decade. In "mature" economies manufacturing as a share of total economic output has decreased constantly and is now significantly below 20%. For a long time Germany was unable to decouple from this trend. However, manufacturing in Germany accounts for a higher share of total economic output than in all other mature economies and has recently returned to the level reached before the slump of 2009. Growth in manufacturing in Germany has been higher than that of gross domestic product since 2010 and looks set to remain so in 2013 with growth of 3.5% for the fourth year in succession.
