Economic-policy recommendations for improving the eastern German economy

Author

Listed:
  • Wolfgang Böhmer

Abstract

Wolfgang Böhmer, Minister President of Saxony-Anhalt, points out that especially Saxony-Anhalt was affected by the economic upheaval after unification, since the two dominating branches of industry - heavy machinery and plant construction as well as chemicals - had no chances of survival in their former structures. This deficit required very painful structural adjustments. However, through investments in the infrastructure, a targeted promotion of economic development and particularly investments in knowledge and research, the goal of putting Saxony-Anhalt on its own two feet can be reached by 2019.
