In Belgien ähnelt das konjunkturelle Muster sehr stark demjenigen der anderen westeuropäischen Länder. Das reale Bruttoinlandsprodukt expandierte im Jahr 2002 mit 0,8% knapp dem Durchschnitt Westeuropas entsprechend. Die Erwerbslosigkeit stieg spürbar an, und die Arbeitslosenquote lag bei 7,3%. Die Teuerungsrate erreichte im Schnitt des Jahres 1,6%. 2003 dürfte sich das reale Bruttoinlandsprodukt nur noch um 0,5% erhöhen, und auf dem Arbeitsmarkt dürfte sich die Lage nochmals verschlechtern. Die Arbeitslosenquote wird sich im Jahresdurchschnitt auf 8% erhöhen. Die Konsumentenpreise werden um 1¼% über dem Niveau des Vorjahres liegen. 2004 wird sich die Konjunktur im Laufe des Jahres zunehmend erholen. Das reale Bruttoinlandsprodukt wird um 1¾% wachsen. Die Arbeitslosenquote wird wiederum bei 8% und die Teuerungsrate bei 1¼% liegen.
