Temporary Work – a Rapidly Growing Type of Employment

Author

Listed:
  • Wolfgang Ochel

Abstract

Temporary work has sharply expanded during past years. In 1975 the number of temporarily employed amounted to about 11,000 in west Germany, in 2001 they amounted to almost 300,000 in Germany as a whole. Despite this growth, Germany only takes a middle position in an international comparison. This is because the expansion of temporary work was hampered by relatively strong regulation. Despite a liberalisation of the legal rules in the 1990s, Germany still belongs to the three EU countries with the strictest regulation of temporary work.
