Construction activity in Europe: moderate expansion after 2003

Abstract

Nowhere else in Europe is the construction sector so deeply in crisis as in Germany. This was seen in the results of the 52nd EUROCONSTRUCT Conference on 6 December 2001 in Rome. For the aggregated European construction output, a slight expansion is expected from 2003 onwards, after stagnation in 2001 and 2002, and a return to a moderate expansion course. The construction sector, therefore, will continue to retard economic growth in Europe. In 2004 a new record for construction output of €950 billion will be reached, but construction will continue to decline as a percentage of GDP in Western Europe.
