Abstract

In ifo Schnelldienst 19/2001, discussion focussed on "Climate protection: is the emission trading system an efficient means for reducing emissions?". In additional comments on this topic, Prof. Uwe Schubert and Oliver Perci, Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, argue "that with the current state of knowledge, the general advantages of emission trading can potentially outweigh the disadvantages especially if the regulatory framework can be designed properly and it can be ensured that the system is open for necessary changes that are sure to come. In the opinion of Prof. Rüdiger Pethig, University of Siegen, "the introduction or international trade in rights for greenhouse-gas emissions is the only viable way to reach the goal of stabilising the world climate".
