Abstract

According to data released by the European Commission, average industrial capacity utilization in the EU was 82.8% at the beginning of the year compared to 81.2% in October 1999. The most recent figures for Germany are from the March results of the Ifo Business Survey. In western German manufacturing (excluding food and beverages) the expansion in the plant utilization rate continues: 87.9% was reported in March compared to 87.0% in December 1999 (both seasonally adjusted). Order reserves at 2.8 production months held their December level but were assessed considerably more favourably. In eastern German manufacturing (also without food and beverages) plant utilization increased from 81.4% to 82.0%, and order reserves grew from 2.9 to 3.2 production months. In both eastern and western Germany, production increases are planned for the second quarter of 2000.
