Deutsche Biotechnologieforschung mit großem Nachholbedarf

Abstract

Der Bericht faßt die Ergebnisse einer Untersuchung über die moderne Biotechnologie zusammen. Besonders auffallend ist die Dominanz der USA im internationalen Vergleich im Bereich der gentechnischen Erfindungen. Die Studie erforschte besonders die Situation und die zukünftigen Erwartungen der Bereiche Bio- und Gentechnologie, Naturstoffe nach ihrer chemischen Struktur, Naturstoffe nach ihrer Funktion und die nachwachsenden Rohstoffe. Eine Einzelbetrachtung der Erfindungen zeigt, daß zwischen 1982 bis 1984 und 1987 bis 1989 weltweit die Bereiche Pflanzenschutz mit 168 % sowie der Bereich Proteine und Peptide mit 135 % am stärksten gestiegen ist. Deutschland führt bei den Erfindungen im Umweltbereich, die die biologische Behandlung von Wasser und Schlamm beinhaltet. Diesem Markt wird für die Zukunft große Bedeutung zugerechnet. Innerhalb der Europäischen Union ist Deutschland führend. Allerdings werden als Folge der öffentlichen Diskussion in Deutschland Genehmigungen für Freisetzungsexperimente kaum erteilt. Das stellt große Hemmnisse auf diesem Kerngebiet der Gentechnik dar, so daß mit einer positiven Entwicklung dieses Bereiches nur in begrenztem Umfang gerechnet werden kann.
