ifo Economic Forecast for Eastern Germany and Saxony Winter 2020: Recovery of the East German Economy Takes Longer than Expected

Abstract

In 2020, economic output in eastern Germany is expected to have shrunk by minus 4.4%; in Saxony, GDP is even expected to be minus 5.0% lower (Germany: minus 5.1%). In the current year, the economy in eastern Germany and Saxony is expected to grow by 3.6% and 4.1% respectively (Germany: 4.2%).
