Abstract

The positive relationship between the qualityof the work environment, and workers’ performanceis a well-known issue. But what is thedifference between a healthy and welcomingworkplace and a hostile and discriminating one? This article, using data coming from two INAPPsurveys on the quality of work (carried out in2010 and 2015) is aimed at describing the Italianworkplaces by focusing on the social climatewith respect to: job satisfaction; relationshipswith colleagues and supervisors; skills mismatch;and presence of discrimination and harassment.Furthermore, for some variables, workers’ perceptionis compared with the employers’ view.In a timespan of profound economic, social, andcultural transformations, the paper reflects onthis complexity in an attempt to provide food forthought in both analytical and policy terms.
