Abstract

?Does unemployment or bad working conditions may also be the source of high-risk behaviors? In an opposite way, does drinking increase too much the risk of unemployment? The relationship between alcohol consumption and professional life are complicated because of multiple causalities and unobserved individual characteristics. For the first time on French data, the survey ? ?Santé et itinéraire professionnel? ? 2006-2010 allows to analyze the links between employment status, working conditions and alcohol consumption, by simultaneous equations models. The econometrics results show that, in 2010, workers who are exposed or have been permanently exposed to physical strain during their career have a higher probability of chronic consumption, while exposure to psychosocial risks is not playing. Having a chronic risk alcohol consumption increases significantly the probability of being unemployed (up 30%). If workers exposed to physical strain are not particularly threatened by unemployment, those with a risky alcohol consumption are more likely to be unemployed (up to + 30%).?
