Abstract

Innovative economist and policy maker, Jean Fourastié introduced in 1949 a theory predicting the strong economic growth of the “30 Glorieuses”, the subsequent fall of manufacturing and rise of services, as well as a secular stagnation at the turn of the millennium. His theory inspired Baumol’s cost disease (Baumol effect) and remains relevant today for analysing recent economic evolutions.
