Abstract

Geographical inequalities in provision of healthcare lead to patient flows between French departments. In the case of cancer treatment, we explore the factors that influence the choice of place of care where drugs are given. The analysis focuses on expensive drugs consumed from 2009 to 2013 by cancer patients who live in the Centre-Val de Loire region. The results of the nested logit confirm the negative role of distance and the positive impact of developed care provision on the probability of choosing a department of care. The impact of individual characteristics on the probability of being treated outside the region (age, molecule, cancer location…) is also defined. The calculation of marginal effects confirms the attractiveness of healthcare facilities located in the Paris area and in the departments bordering the region.
