Abstract

Due to the importance of technology trade for developed countries, we investigate the determinants of exports of technology for 21 OECD countries with 88 partners during the period 2002 to 2010. From a gravity equation, our outcome lies in two main results specific to technology trade. Exports of technology increase with the stock of FDI of the firms originating from exporter country, while there is a substitution effect between FDI and exports of merchandises or technological goods. R&D expenditures raise more exports of technology than exports of goods. So there is a specificity of trade in technology : it is more sensitive to technological variables and shared values (language) than trade in goods.
